Great Summer Snacks – That Are Also Healthy!

Summertime is here! Time for warm sunny days, visits to the beach, 4th of July fireworks, and backyard BBQs. Along with all that comes the equally as enticing summertime treats – ice cream, chili dogs, burgers, bonfire s’mores, grilled corn, popsicles, corn dogs, sweet ice tea – the list is truly endless.

While summer offers up lots of seasonal treats, not all are healthy. Plus people like to indulge a bit over the summer. Add to that the fact that parties, cookouts, and summer activities rarely include many healthy options. It’s easy to get caught up in the summertime fun and throw your diet or healthy eating habits out the window.

It’s fine to indulge a bit and enjoy the season but if you want to stick to your diet or cut down on the unhealthy options, here are a few healthy snacks and summer foods you might want to try.

You can pick up most of the items you’ll need for these snacks at Eric’s Health Food Shoppe. We are your one-stop summer shop for organic fruits, veggies, snacks, and more.

Fresh Fruit

By far the easiest summer snack, fresh fruit is a great way to get vital nutrients while also enjoying a sweet treat.

There are tons of options with lots of fruits in peak season during the summer. Pack a bag of grapes to snack on at the park or throw an orange in your bag for a quick and easy snack. If you have a bit more time, turn your fresh fruit into an even more enticing treat by making your own homemade fruit popsicles or frozen bananas.

Energy / Granola Bars

For a boost of energy or some fiber to hold you over until dinner time, consider adding a few energy or granola bars to your summer snack arsenal.

Not all granola bars are made equal and if you want to stay healthy this summer, make sure you opt for a healthy and nutritious brand. We carry a number at Eric’s Health Food Shoppe. Alternatively, you can make your own homemade granola bars with all your favorite ingredients.

Veggies and Dip

Summertime can be busy – from parties to events to holidays and family vacations. Getting in your recommended servings of daily vegetables can sometimes be a struggle. Thankfully, snacking on some veggies and dip is the perfect option.

Veggies that make for good dipping include crunchy carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, snow peas and sugar snap peas, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes. Dipping options can include hummus (a great source of plant-based protein), guacamole, salsa, sour cream dips, yogurt- based dips, etc.

Nuts

Need an easy on the go summer snack option for busy summer days? Grab a handful of nuts and you’ll be amazed at how they can fill you up and keep you going.

Nuts are packed with vital nutrients like vitamin E, L-arginine, and Omega-3s. All of these have been shown to be great for heart health. Nuts are also rich in fiber which can help lower cholesterol and keep you feeling full. No more urges to grab an ice cream sandwich on your way home.

While nuts are great to eat plain, you can also make your own trail mix by mixing a variety of nuts with some dried fruit and/or coconut flakes.

Popcorn

It used to be that drive-in movies were the ultimate sign of summer. While the industry has died off in the last decade, movie date-nights, backyard projectors, and fireworks all call for the same classic treat – popcorn.

Popcorn is actually a very healthy summertime treat – that’s if you skip the more popular butter and salt drenched options. Instead, opt for healthier brands. We carry some options at Eric’s Health Food Shoppe. Alternatively, you can make your own popcorn at home in no time! Popcorn kernels are easy to pop on a standard stovetop and you can use your own toppings to make the popcorn sweet, savory, or salty.

Smoothies

Summer can get hot! If you need a cool treat to beat the heat try a refreshing smoothie. Smoothies are the perfect summertime treat – cold, delicious, quick to make, and easy to grab and go.

Smoothies can be customized to your own preferences and diet. In addition to the obvious – fruits – consider upping the nutrients level with kale, avocado, protein powders, etc.
